Young Artists' Competition
Symphony on the Bay is dedicated to nurturing young musical talents through a number of venues and opportunities. One of these is the Young Artists' Competition. This year the orchestra will again hold a competition for young musicians, giving them a chance to win a bursary and play as a soloist with the orchestra. Here are the details:
Young Artists' Competition 2013

We apologize to anyone who might have tried to reach us by e-mail to discuss their application. Problems with our e-mail have been resolved but any e-mail sent before May 10 has been lost. We have therefore extended the application deadline to May 21 and we will accept applications by e-mail to info@symphonyonthebay.ca with recordings as attached mp3 files, as well as applications sent by regular mail with recording on an audio CD.
Purpose
To provide an opportunity for young area musicians to perform as a soloist with orchestra.
Prize
The winner of each category will receive a bursary of $200 and perform as a soloist in our 2013-2014 season.
Categories
The competition is open to orchestral instruments (brass, woodwinds, strings), harp, piano and voice. Junior and Senior categories are determined by the contestant’s age as of May 31, 2013.
- Junior – Instrumental, age 15 or under.
- Senior – Instrumental, age 16 to 23, or Voice, age 16 to 26.
Past winners cannot re-apply in the same category. Past junior category winners must wait until the third year after winning and must be eligible for the senior category before re-applying.
Music Selection Requirements
The contestant must select one or more movements of a concerto, or a one-movement composition originally composed for their instrument or voice and orchestra. The orchestral accompaniment must be readily available in print (subject to approval by the symphony librarian), and the total performance time should not exceed 15 minutes in length.
Eligibility Requirements
- A contestant must be a Canadian citizen or Permanent Resident of Canada, or a non-Canadian citizen who has studied with a Canadian teacher in Canada for at least 2 years.
- A contestant must reside or have resided or studied in the regions of Hamilton, Halton, Niagara or Southwestern Ontario.
- Contestants should be recommended by their teachers.
Application Fee
There is a non-refundable application fee of $30.00.
Audition Procedure
Contestants must submit an application form and fee along with a recording of themselves playing the selected music with piano accompaniment. Recordings will not be identified when audited by the judges. The finalists and their accompanists will be invited to perform before a panel of judges on the morning of Saturday June 15, 2013, at the Hamilton Mennonite Church, 143 Lower Horning Road, Hamilton, Ontario.
Recordings will be returned if a stamped self-addressed envelope is included with the application.

Completed application form, fee and recording must be received at the address below by 5:00 pm on Monday, May 21, 2013. Submissions by e-mail to info@symphonyonthebay.ca with attached mp3 file are also acceptable.
